I need this image:
http://rpgmapshare.com/modules/g2/d/227 ... pwreck.jpg

To have a 1in square grid put onto of it and the entire thing blown up to a scale so that when I print it the squares come out printed as being 1 in squares.

In terms of the scale of the squares to the image, the boat should be 4 squares wide at its middle and 2 squares wide at the rear end (don't know proper sailing terms) [the right most side].

Any help, or advice on how I can achieve this through GIMP would be awesome.

I'm not sure if that image will print very well. There's just not enough resolution to do a large scale print out.
Anyway, what I would do is draw a grid that is 11 squares by 8 squares and print it on a 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.
Also, some printers give poster printing options where you can print an image on multiple sheets of paper. So if you used four sheets you would draw a grid of 17 x 22 squares.

Edit: Oops, sorry. I just reread your post. You wanted 4 x 2 squares. Your program should have a units that the image is measured in. Change the units to inches. Crop the boat to it's edges and resize the image to 4 by 2 inches. Now draw 1 inch squares (I'd use copy and paste for the squares). I'm not familiar with Gimp so I'm not sure how that would work.

Ok, I just downloaded Gimp and I gave it a shot. I was able to do what you had described. Hopefully, I can describe the steps I took.
1: Open shipwreck in Gimp.
2: At lower left, change the drop down box from px to in. The measurement guides should now be in inches.
3: Rescale the image to 6 inches wide and 9 inches tall. Click on the Image drop down, then on Scale Image. Change the units to inches. Click on the chain symbol to break the chain (so it won't keep the aspect ratio of the scaling).
4: On the Image drop down, click on Configure Grid. Enter a 1 for the grid size with inches as the units.
5: On the View drop down, click on Show Grid.

You will see a grid covering the entire image with the 4x2 grid on the boat. When you print the image, just make sure that you don't tell the printer to resize to fit.

Awesome! Thank you! :)
I'll do this tomorrow night when I have a chance to work on something again
